ESG:

Understanding our environmental impact

As a rolling stock leasing company, we understand the environmental impact that rail has – both positive and negative – and we believe it can play a key role in addressing the future environmental challenges associated with the sustainable transportation of goods and people.

We have worked to systematically identify and understand:

  • The actual and potential environmental interactions of our operations that we can directly control.
  • The environmental interactions that others control throughout our value chain, but that we can work to influence e.g. through proactive dialogue with our partners, customers, and other key stakeholders.
  • The environmental legislation and industry requirements with which we must comply.

We are committed to helping drive forward environmental improvements associated with the rail sector wherever we can, especially issues such as energy efficiency, carbon emissions, resource efficiency, and air quality.

Our climate strategy and sustainability policy are laid out in separate policy documents, however, contribute to the delivery of our wider environmental strategy.

Our environmental principles

We have worked to embed environmental protection into the heart of our business culture, through relevant processes, procedures and staff training. Our approach aims to:

  • Drive environmental improvements to our fleet wherever possible, including the periodic setting of measurable objectives and targets.
  • Getting to carbon neutral (direct operations) and net zero. In terms of the direct control over Beacon’s emissions, the objective is to achieve carbon neutrality in the short to medium term and then net zero in the longer term in our direct operations while supporting the energy transition and promoting a safe and reliable industry.
  • Prevent pollution, minimise waste and resource consumption wherever we can, considering the whole life cycle of our fleet.
  • Work with our key stakeholders to influence innovation and positive change across the rail sector with respect to global and local environmental issues (e.g. climate change and local air quality).
  • Ensure compliance with environmental legal and other industry requirements e.g. codes of practice.

Our management commitment

Our Board and senior management team are committed to supporting Beacon to implement this policy, through provision of sufficient resources and training. We also undertake to review this policy, and our progress against our objectives and targets on a regular basis to ensure we are meeting our commitments, continually improving our approach and striving for the best environmental outcomes.
