Leading rail leasing company, Beacon, has ordered 15 CBD90 battery shunting locomotives from British manufacturer, Clayton Equipment. This order underpins a three-year exclusivity agreement, whereby Beacon will be the sole lessor of these assets in the UK.
The 90 tonne Bo-Bo CBD90 is the largest to be built in the UK for more than 20 years and aimed primarily at industrial shunting applications. The CBD90 is powered by an onboard battery that provides emissions free operation where ground-based charging facilities are available. The battery is topped up in service by the regenerative brakes and, where range or operation requires it, the quiet and efficient Stage V compliant engine can be used to maintain performance.
British customers will be able to lease the CBD90 from Beacon, with commercial benefits including reduced costs and lead times as well as UK-based support from both companies.
Beacon CEO Adam Cunliffe said:
“Our new partnership with Clayton Equipment will help us meet the increasing demand for lower emissions, new technology, more capacity and cost-effective assets. These new locomotives will provide environmental benefits and allow our customers to realise cost savings on fuel.”
Clayton Equipment Managing Director Clive Hannaford said:
“This unique agreement is a significant milestone in the company’s history and provides a major growth opportunity. Beacon has extensive rail asset expertise which will help ensure the two companies maximise the potential to supply our customer base with sustainable, low emission, environmentally compliant equipment.”
